As some of you might remember, the Newsvine Community's generous and collaborative response to the catastrophic 2010 earthquake in Haiti was one of our brightest moments as an online community. I was shocked and appalled to read this extensive investigative report put together by ProPublica and NPR, detailing the massive series of blunders and negligence by the American Red Cross in deploying (or rather not deploying) the Half Billion Dollars in aid money raised in response to that devastating disaster.
The Newsvine Community and msnbc.com partnered together in contributing money to the American Red Cross to aid Haitians in their hour of need, and I am sorry to all of you that we did. I personally will not ever be donating money to the American Red Cross again, as most of what they themselves trumpeted as having done with the money was simply passing it on to smaller, more effective organizations on the ground in Haiti, after taking a cut out of every dollar donated, ostensibly for administrative blah blah blah. Even so, there are still a whole lot of millions unaccounted for, which is more than just a damn shame; it's a tragedy of corruption and incompetence.
