A number of you are already members in the Unofficial Newsvine Facebook Group, but as I'm told by know-it-all Mike D., groups are so 2008 and the new, new *in* thing are Facebook Pages. Actually, the real reason I've been paying attention to this sort of thing lately is that I've been tasked with taking a close look at our msnbc.com page. Once there, I realized that we don't even have a Newsvine one. WTF?! Msnbc.com being ahead of Newsvine when it comes to snazzy web 2.0ness?
"No way am I going to let *that* happen", I said to myself. So, I created the Newsvine Page, and currently I am the only "fan". What the heck are pages and fans for, and what's the difference between a 'fan' and a 'member' of a 'group' - you ask? Heck, I don't know.... but, I did get a sneaky idea. Once I get the msnbc.com page all sorted out and pretty, I'm going to present it to the folks in our company who are interested in this sort of thing. I think it would be EXTRA cool to say something along with that like..... "oh, and BTW, we also have a Newsvine page. It's about X days old and, yeah, it has twice the number of fans as our msnbc.com one has" ;) Currently, they have about 3000 fans, so it's no small task to get up to that many, but being Viners we're all very loud and have lots of friends online, so hey, *maybe* we can give them a run for their money!
Of course, Newsvine and msnbc.com are the same company now, so it's all in good fun - but I am constantly going on about how much more thoughtful, intelligent and outspoken Newsvine folks are than the "average" msnbc.com reader (many of whom don't comment). Of course, if you found Newsvine through msnbc.com and are now registered here, we consider you a Newsviner. You have been assimilated. /borgvoice
Also, the msnbc.com page is fairly button-up, whereas I want all of us Newsviners to show our cousins across the lake that true identity comes from collaboration and community! So, please help me pimp our Newsvine (FB page)! I've started by posting the details to the Chicago Vinemeet there. Y'know, Viki's home address and telephone number, etc. etc.
Maybe this article will get like 2 votes and my Newsvine page will have 5 fans, at which point, I'll delete the whole mess and chalk it up as yet another "Calvin idea" (like Newsvine Groups). But on the other hand, if my nebulous plan works, we'll have bragging rights beyond our wildest imaginations! Okay, it's more like I'll get to give one or two co-workers a hard time for an afternoon, but you know what I mean. Let the games begin!
Oh, btw, we're currently having a kegger at Newsvine HQ. Feel free to stop on by if you're in the area and are thirsty.
