First big sponsor to return to Tiger Woods' side? Rolex

When infidelity hit Tiger Woods two years ago, sponsors couldn't run away faster from the once endorsement king. He lost Gatorade, Gillette, Tag Heuer, Buick and Accenture, and the only thing we've seen Tiger pushing lately besides Nike is a Japanese pain rub, but that's all changed with the latest announcement that Rolex is back with Tiger after parting ways in 2002, a partnership that started in 1997 when Woods turned professional.

Good for Tiger. I think he's paid his debt to society, golf and his ex. I hope to see him get back on his feet.

I think he's, in a sense, going to keep on paying. Because, as the sports pundits predicted, the sponsors will slowly come back. However, if his performance doesn't improve, along with the fact that he is now has a tarnished image, the contracts will not be as lucrative as they were before.

Oh, he'll probably never earn as much as he once did. But, I think he still has it in him to play at the highest level and dominate the game of golf again (a game I have no interest in btw).

What a waste of money by Rolex. Do you think that there is even one person who will buy a Rolex watch because Tiger Woods advertised it? Absolutely not. But I understand that when a Company is looking for a celebrity name to advertise it's product, they look for "affordable" celebrities. So, since Tiger Woods is hard up for endorsements these days, they might have bought him for the price of a free Rolex. Still, if I saw a Rolex on the wrist of Warren Buffet, I might think that a Rolex is a wise investment and I might buy it. But if I saw a Rolex on the wrist of Tiger Woods, the most I could think is that by wearing a Rolex, I could have sex with a lot of women other than my wife. Rolex would have gotten more mileage out of the money they spent on Tiger Woods by saying, instead, that they donated the money to cancer research.

Oops, sorry - my comment below should've been a response to this one.

Ted, funny you should mention Rolex and Warren Buffett. Even though I'm pretty sure he's still wearing the same Timex from 1962, Berkshire did acquire Ben Bridge about ten years ago (my friend Marc pictured with good ole Warren). Ben Bridge is the single biggest reseller of Rolex watches worldwide, if I'm not mistaken. So, celebrity wrist endorsements aside, I'm pretty sure that a company as well run as Ben Bridge doesn't bet so heavily on a watch manufacturer that isn't at least as well run itself.

As a watch collector, there are many brands I fancy - but regardless of brand, model or style, no watch is better made than a Rolex, in my humble opinion. So, the Rolex endorsement by Woods does more to improve my view of Tiger than it does the other way around. Rolex has already earned its stripes (pun intended), many times over, in my book.

        Just my 2psi!

Calvin, I also have many Rolex watches and I enjoy them very much. I got them a few years ago when I was vacationing in New York City. I was walking in the area of Broadway & 55th St., in Manhattan. There was a guy with an attache case hanging from his neck. He ushered me to the side of the street and flipped open his attache case, and there were dozens of Rolex, Gucci and Cartier watches for only $15 each. I bought about six of them and still wear them today. Of course, my Rolex watches run on batteries.
