Farewell Newsvine (and Thank You)

Today is my last day at The Vine. I am moving on and looking forward to new adventures in life and business.

I will greatly miss working with Viners on fun projects like the DNC & RNC, CES, breaking news coverage, running for office, Lost in the Vines, Newsvine Guides, televised debate analysis, Entertainment Gateway, charity events, disaster relief, investigative journalism, political analyses, original reporting from the Iraq and Afghanistan, publishing of books, interviews with celebrities, The Arena of Death, Newsvine Podcasts, community photography, radio interviews, structured debates, coverage of music , and way too many more to list them all.

I will most certainly not stop attending Vinemeets, though I will no longer have access to the company credit card to facilitate alcohol-fueled IRL embarrassment by Newsviners themselves.

I want to express my gratitude to the entire Newsvine Community for all the amazing experiences over the past 5 years. I also want to thank the Newsvine Guides for their unending patience, integrity and support in doing some of the least fun but necessary things around the Vine. Last, I'd like to thank and re-congratulate all of our RAV recipients - whose accomplishments will never fade in my mind.

I will miss having the opportunities to support so many of the creative and intelligent endeavors that Newsviners have come up with over the years. Though not all of those instances of Sweet Fennel got the recognition and attention that they deserved, you should all know that I have always appreciated and understood the significance of and hard work that has gone into each and every one of those.

I hope that the period of my stewardship of the Vine will be looked back upon as a fruitful one.

As far as what's next for me, I will leave that as a mystery for a little while yet. But, I will be doing quite a bit of traveling. One of the things I really have been grateful for in this crazy Newsvine adventure, is that I have had the good fortune of meeting many amazing people who I would have otherwise probably never have known. I consider many of them to be good friends now. I would love to put more faces to familiar names in this way. So, if you're willing to tolerate a possible visit from this soon-to-be retired Newsvine co-founder, please include your city/country in a comment below so that I can look you up if I'm ever passing through your neck of the woods.

One more thing: I am really looking forward to finally being able to participate as a "regular member" of the Newsvine Community. Well, almost. I have been given a Newsvine Immunity Idol - and will be impervious to moderation. But, I promise not to use the idol unless absolutely necessary (e.g., if someone disagrees with me).

Calvin

Update January 2011: I'm happy to announce my new endeavor. Please pay me a visit at my new online abode, AtlasOmega. :)

Calvin: I want to thank you for co-founding such a wonderful place to share news, stories, and articles. My appreciation for the whole program is something I can hardly put into words.

Somehow, you managed to create something that was a couple of steps above those 'other guys' like Digg, etc. who only pretend to be what Newsvine actually IS.

I remember creating accounts (after I joined Newsvine) over at Salon.com, and Digg, and Helium.com. Either I ended up deleting those accounts, or in the case of Helium, I removed all the articles and just don't go there anymore. There is nothing remotely like Newsvine, which is a pretty straightforward site in many respects.

One strange thing is that we've never met, and yet I will miss you. I can't explain it.

Wherever you go and whatever you are doing, I am sure you will do well.

While I appreciate this forum as a means of expression, as you move forward in life, I suggest that if you really want to be in news, you learn how to be an impartial journalist.

Or, perhaps a better career for you would be public relations or advertising so you can practice your spin.

Thank for establishing this forum. I hope that one day msnbc headlines will be accurate.

Except for the people that work at newsvine, NO ONE HERE KNOWS THIS "CALVIN" PERSON.

I doubt you know whether he is tall or short.

So acting like he is a long time friend is a little disingenuous.

Will there be any changes to Newsvine after he departs? Or will it still just be people commenting on the days news/propaganda like it has always been?

And why is he leaving? Did he get a better offer?

If Karen in L.A. didn't like his political slant, so be it. Isn't one honest opinion better than a hundred sycophants saying what they think you want to hear?

I would imagine that Calvin is a big boy an can hear the undiluted truth. If people didn't like his political leanings, then this would be the last opportunity to say so.

And isn't that what Newsvine is REALLY about?

Killfile - I'll wager that the number of people who go on newsvine and meet at a newsvine event is less than .1% of the total, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were .01%.

I only found this thread because the headline is "Farewell Newsvine". That is either poorly written, or misleading. Newsvine is to my knowledge not going away.

With all the nutjobs out there (and frequently on here), I'm not sure that I would want to meet and greet them anyway.

But like I said, each is entitled to their own opinion.

Disingenuous!?!?!?!?! WRONG!!!! Long time friend... I suppose that depends on what you think of as a "long time"... I met him... Had a couple of beers with him... Corresponded with him on many issues... I can't speak for Calvin, but as far as I am concerned, he is my friend!!! My comments to him in this article are absolutely sincere!

It's amazing, some people can find a way to argue about the most simple things in life.

Most are just saying goodbye to one of the people that made this forum possible, a forum that actually pays you for the content you post, but you feel the need to piss all over that to make an irrelevant point.

So you don't know Calvin, are we suppose to really care?

There's probably some disingenuous comments in here, but you can't assume that they all are. I've met Calvin in person and have corresponded through email, comments, etc, just like many other online friends, guess it depends on how much credence you give to that sort of thing, but for me, an online relationship can be just as meaningful as one in the physical realm.

Every article posted on the internet on a major site has a way to respond or reply now. This is just where MSN/MSNBC routes some of their comments. CNN does it their own way, and plenty of sites use facebook or twitter. The end result is the same. The reader comments on the article. The debate goes from there.

I do apologize if some of you know Calvin personally and you were offended by me defending people commenting against his slant. (Of course if you are paid by newsvine, then you work for newsvine and therefore, as I stated, those would be the people that know Calvin personally.) I will admit that I had no idea that people actually meet in person from meeting on newsvine. Or that there is some newsvine event thing. Personally, I'm not interested, as if you have something to say that is of value, type away, and I can read it at my leisure. For me, it is excercise for my mind to comment on an article. It's not like you are ever going to change someone's mind with a comment.

But this is newsvine. People get to have their own opinions.

And if Karen in LA doesn't like his slant, then isn't this the appropriate time for her to state her case? He is "Leaving" after all.

Of course it would be more convenient to withhold criticism until ???

(It would be different if he had died or something. But he's leaving voluntarily. Perhaps he has found something better to do, and really then, he is leaving you.)

Rodney, 1.47 -- Oh, no apology necessary.

I was just glad that you, Mal and Killfile said something. Ryan's comment, " So acting like he is a long-time friend is a little disingenuous." ...... really got under 'my' skin, and I had to say something also.

I've read every comment and thought it was easy to tell those that know Calvin personally from those that have been here long enough to see what his visions and accomplishments have been - and in my case, am mourning the loss .. and chose to talk about it.

Thank you for your concern.

Thanks for the apology Ryan... but my reaction had nothing to do with your "defense of people commenting against his slant." It was to your assertion that "acting like he is a long time friend is a little disingenuous" and to your assertion that "NO ONE HERE KNOWS THIS 'CALVIN' PERSON" I see no connection between those utterly erroneous assertions and your defense of Karen.

As far as I'm concerned nitpicking can always be set aside when it is not appropriate for the moment. In a celebration and farewell to a friend or acquaintance it is always wise to be cordial. If a complaint is needed it should be done privately. I'm sure everyone on Newsvine knows how to write an e-mail.

Sorry if you find my comments in appropriate js, I really am. But I do not consider questioning my sincerity "nit picking." I made my first comment on this article to expressed my sincere thanks to Calvin, as have many others. But I am also here to do the very thing that Calvin and others created this site for... express my honest opinions... and to try to "get smarter here." No matter what the tone of my comments may be, I hope Calvin will see that I am making them in recognition and appreciation of the very great thing he and the other founders of Newsvine have made for us.

Sometimes, we just have to wonder where people are coming from, don't we? There is so much diversity here on the vine, we're bound to run into the 3% of the people that can't be happy, no matter what...

Keep the faith, Viki-- the vast majority of people are decent. The few that aren't just seem to stand out from the rest and cause all of us to despair! :-)

Trying to put a political spin on the co-founder's retirement? Ridiculous, unnecessary, and insulting, IMHO.

What has Calvin done for me, and how did the creation of Newsvine benefit me personally? I'm a bit embarrassed to talk about it, but here goes:

Our regular website for Adventure Books of Seattle gets plenty of visits and we sell a lot of books. Our Newsvine column receives TEN TIMES MORE TRAFFIC, and some articles I've posted here appear on the first entry for popular Google searches. One article, The Top Ten Historical Events That Shaped America and Why They Did is downloaded by 1,000-2,000 kids every month for the past two years. There are others like it.

Thank you, Calvin.

Because of the varied nature and open policy regarding the type of articles that can be posted, and the large number of categories available at Newsvine, I didn't have to just write straight articles. I also was able to share flash fiction, short stories, interviews, and any number of items short of kiddie porn or advocating the overthrow of the government. Free expression and First Amendment rights are certainly upheld at Newsvine.

Thank you, Calvin.

Oh...and they've paid me well over a thousand dollars so far. I almost forgot to mention that. *smiles*

Thank you, Calvin.

And if Karen in LA doesn't like his slant, then isn't this the appropriate time for her to state her case? He is "Leaving" after all. Of course it would be more convenient to withhold criticism until ???

I don't know, how about not holding your criticism, but directing it somewhere appropriate. Karen has had plenty of time to contact Calvin privately-- Newsvine has a built in function for that, after all. And if she wasn't capable of figuring out that feature (you know, the hard task of clicking on Calvin's name or using the "search" function to find his column, and then clicking the "Contact this Author" button) until right now, it's not like she couldn't bitch about her opinion of perceived bias on Newsvine to the staff that's remaining behind.

But then she wouldn't get to be the person at the party who, after having too much to drink, tells the host's wife she's ugly.

Going away parties are usually not the right time for someone to pipe up with a 'Good! I'm glad you're gone!' People generally mentally label those folks as "@!$%#s" and hope they don't have to cross their path very often.

BobinFL, Karen and rickace are being classless boors.

But then, that's to be expected of them. They've got a track record that a lot of us are already familiar with.

Really now? Can you sip your Starbucks without brurning your lips?

Aw, rickace. I'm a Sonics fan. I don't drink coffee anyway, but you won't ever catch me in a Starbucks. Not since '06 anyway.

The best boss you'll ever have will let your customers evaluate your performance. Who, then are your customers?

Are you saying Calvin didn't let Newsviners evaluate my performance? Because that's pretty silly. We get tons of feedback. Clarify?

I suggest that if you really want to be in news, you learn how to be an impartial journalist.

I don't think Calvin really wants to be in news. Of Newsvine staff, I'm the only one with a journalism background to speak of, and I wasn't even a comm major. I suggest you lecture him about scuba diving, that'll probably be a lot more relevant.

OMFG, that'll teach me to post an article like this right before I have a busy few days and can't check in!

All I can say is that I guess this little mini-roller coaster thread is a good example of the Vine. Passion, assumptions, threadjacking, a little conspiracy theory, jumping to conclusions, support, friendship, irony, wit and humor all rolled into one.

As far as actually "knowing" each other, as a few people have pointed out, some Newsviners know me quite well, and vice versa.

For instance, how else would I know that:

Killfile wears a kimono to sleep and gets all of his ideas for articles from his brainy wife, Courts.

Viki is always in good humor even when walking around all day in 100 degree heat or when finding out that her kid has discovered online porn.

Mykola is actually quite mild-mannered and falls in love with girls who are pretty and musically talented, and snores loudly.

Oldfogey has the most amazing and quirky collection of custom t-shirts, my favorite of which reads, "Oldfogey is on Ebay, check him out [URL]".

Walt D.'s enthusiasm and impulse to share outpaces his survival instinct. (this happened right after I visited him)

winsomecowboy, while infuriating online at times - is a super complex guy who I'd share a riverboat ride with any day. He also likes to build inferno fires at 5AM.

MalamuteMan enjoys a good handcrafted beer and appreciates the San Juans.

Adam Hobson doesn't like my driving.

Cash looks leaner in person than he does online, but is just as quick witted and yes, does appreciate a beautiful woman.

Celestina can hold her liquor and is not actually all fuzzy-wuzzy (she almost bit my ear off).

Brian Ford's dry sarcasm and sharp tongue is tempered by the fact that he wore a man bag all around Vegas. I also shared a terrible hangover and some convenience store food with him on a road trip through Pennsylvania that I'll never forget.

Kymlee is jovial and keeps her wits about her even when everyone else is throwing caution to the wind. I still thank her for saving me from playing some practical jokes that would've surely gotten me into some trouble.

Scott Butki is an introvert.

Orlando Dozier is a chill dude.

Red Wolf and I share the same taste in watches.

Katrix is super friendly and energetic.

Ben Joseph's young looks are deceiving, he's brilliant and opinionated.

Gwenny is super into MMORPGs, and I want to play Diablo 3 with her.

Stacy Malbon does not actually eat men alive for breakfast, it's usually lunch or dinner.

BM Vaughn wears styley glasses.

Laef1 moved to Canada.

Eric Atienza is a hip dresser and (I think) someone puked in his car in NYC while I was there.

OttO was super shy when interviewing someone at the RNC.

Jay Butler is a handsome dude.

Faruk Ates has a cool accent and fits right in at tech conventions. He's a little over-hyped about the iPhone 4 though.

Rob Goodlatte became my intern, and we have a bet about him climbing Mt. Everest by age 45.

These are just some of the Viners who I've met in person (except for Red Wolf) and consider to be friends (well maybe winsome doesn't consider me a friend), off the top of my head. There are a ton more who I've had the great pleasure of getting to know over the years, who I look forward to meeting in person.

The one common theme in getting to know all of these people is the fact that our political leanings have had zero influence on whether or not a good friendship has developed.

I didn't view my interactions with people through working at Newsvine as just another task on the job - abstract communications with users who I'll never meet - I've always genuinely been interested in the people behind the online personas and avatars, which is why I made it a point to meet and visit people, to put together and support events that took place offline.

This is why my article was about saying 'farewell' and expressing gratitude for having been fortunate enough to take part in a place where I have made many good friends, and hopefully in a different role, will continue to make many more.

Calvin, love you...but that post came off like the song 88 Lines :P

ha. too true. i could add a few lines about some women he's met at meets but - i kid. sorta.

Scott Butki is an introvert. yeah like that's newsactually it probably is - thats why prior to meets i revive my piece warning people I AM more shy in person.

I think i've guesed your real next step - scuba diving correspondent for some publication, maybe msnbc-related? It'd explain the traveling comment. My suggestion - avoid the bay of mexico area.

As far as actually "knowing" each other, as a few people have pointed out, some Newsviners know me quite well, and vice versa.

Between that comment and the one from the women chastising him about not being a journalist i'm reminded of trying to explain journalistic principles and conflict of interest issues to calvin while we were getting drunk - thanks, msnbc - at some awful club with weird couches.

The one common theme in getting to know all of these people is the fact that our political leanings have had zero influence on whether or not a good friendship has developed.

Did i mention we passionately disagreed on this issue and yet i respected him more because of it? this is right after seeing the Meeting David Wilson movie and me essentially accusing him of asking us viners to act as shills for msnbc and me, while drinking said alcohol, admitting to feeling like quite the hypocrite.

where does he stand? he will not abide by apartments rented being left in crappy shape. that i know well.

Killfile wears a kimono to sleep and gets all of his ideas for articles from his brainy wife, Courts.

this part is actually true. ask yourself which of the two is in the middle of publishing not one but two academic books.

Calvln, you sure know how to break a fellow's heart. Damn! Now I will cry for a while. It is not nice to make old men cry. You are one of the few things that have carried me through some very thin spots on Newsvine. You ARE Newsvine. Always have been. What do we, I, do now? Whereever you go keep us with you. Whatever you do we can help. Whenever you need a friend, a hand, some fingertips typing, whatever, we will give you all we can. Keep us informed. I love you like a son, Calvin. I am not even going to try to spellcheck this. Thanks for being here.

I agree with these sentiments, well except the crying and loving Calvin like a son, not of age to have grown offspring and the crying, well, I had some time to prepare. It's sad, I'm sad, not only for these sentiments, but also because, well, I don't really know how to say this, I liked the limited personal connection, disconnected but comfortable. I don't want to deal ... hopefully I won't need much in the way of official Newsvine communication.

There are a number of good people here on the Vine, but there are also people I do not see any more.

I'll be first (as far as I know) to ask the question ...

Is the "ship" leaking, sinking, drifting ... off course, heading on a new course? Lately I find a number of things on (and no longer on) the Vine that make me wonder and ...

Wander.

Not real happy here these days.

P.S. Best to you, Calvin.

A.Mac, I was going to be the first to ask, and didn't. I hope Calvin can clue us as to whether the merger is most influential or if it is simply a matter of 'evolution,' cultural shift, political shift, people shift and more. ...First Brian, now Calvin ... has me wondering and wandering a little, too.

Not sure what correlation you are making, Ben.

I was saying either - or... The Merger -or- "evolution." ... or is that not what you meant by "two"?

The idea reminds me of the article "SRO" wrote about what he thinks will happen with Newsvine, do you know what article I am referring to?

I thought about that also regarding a replacement or not .. and if so, who? It would make sense if they don't, though. Being an original owner of Newsvine gave Calvin the opportunity to stay on, as all of the originals (6?) stayed after the buy-out. Attrition could be involved. Hope Calvin doesn't mind this discussion of 'guess work.' ;) ( ..Atleast it's not behind your back, kind sir.)

Ben, were you talking to me or A.Mac?

No ship jumping because of the evolution, just a new course (which was alluded to, I'm pretty certain, not really surprised anyway).

Ben, I was referring to Sir Richard Owen's article, written on May 6, Titled: Prediction: The End of Newsvine as We Know It. I anticipated the merger to take on some of the aspects he mentioned; not sure if this is the one you are thinking of or not.

(Oh, did you mean Brian and Calvin correlating? I understand Brian isn't an employee; sorry I didn't make my point a little clearer. I meant the direction NV appears to be heading as causing both of their departures.)

On the aspects from that article that I think are most significant, I would prefer not to expound on predictions on Calvin's article. What I might say probably is in complete contrast to the vision Calvin has always had for his creation. I don't want to spoil that for him on his way out the door, I hope you understand. From Calvin's article, this makes me get a little teary-eyed and will be remembered is:

" I hope that my period of stewardship of the Vine will be looked back upon as a fruitful one." --- And yes, kind sir, it will.

Reality is reality, although different for each one of us. The sharing of the 'human condition' and our day-to-day lives can have great impact for both ourselves and those that we share it with. Many of the articles that strive for that potential are appreciated by me and I imagine many others.

The element that appears to have been worked into the site is that of a less educational nature, and more of a large-scale, provacative, and higher-class 'Jerry Springer' show. Unfortunately, I don't see this as a good thing; 'flash' gets old and eventually dies off. The other thing I see is the effect of corporatism and consumerism as taking over our lives and changing our basic human ideals; essentially we become another 'product' in the marketplace. I respect your decisions, Calvin, both prior and now - we all would have done the same. ..Just please know that I, for one, saw your 'vision' as something more than just about wealth and prosperity - I saw it as a desire to make us stronger as a community with the power of knowledge...History, current events, political leaders, our government, biotech, agribusiness, technology - all keep us aware of what "is" and what is "to come" - without the knowledge of those we remain an ignorant group in a highly surreptitious environment. Encouraging us to discuss is a large, a very large part of that knowledge. ...Thank you, Calvin ...CL

100% in agreement. It's to be expected somewhat, as new users come to the site, quality degrades, as they participate and grow, etc, quality rises, but not quite to the point it was before, users get frustrated and leave, the cycle repeats, etc. The challenge, I think, is keeping the turnover rate low... if you care about quality anyway... I don't have high hopes.

I agree with you and Ben!!!

and Ben,

The challenge, I think, is keeping the turnover rate low...

Perhaps... but the challenge for me has been keeping my own motivation up... after seeing that in spite of all of the dialog that we have here on Newsvine, the vast majority of us ("us" figuratively speaking) refuse, and I do mean refuse not fail, to learn anything. So many of us are just here to prove to the world that we are "right"... Most of us are NOT here to "get smarter"... it is frustrating, and sad really... There is so much opportunity to learn hear... and yet so many of us abhor learning... It might mean we would have to admit we don't already know everything.

" Cases for depopulation?" -- lol.

Mal, " Most of us are NOT here to "get smarter" --That is pretty much a large part of the "shift" in clientele that is here that I was describing, too. Evolution or what have you, the environment appears to be more of an entertainment (both comedy and a more somber, personal perspective) venue.

You may have been addresssing a more political/philosophical area of the Vine - in which case, I do think most have their minds set on what is important to them and/or what is ethical to them, and they aren't going to change.

I have a wide variety of topics I'm interested in, and enjoy learning from some of the linked information and the msnbc articles, as well as other sources. I truly am here for the information, particularly science, but enjoy some of the personal stories as well.

I agree, we might have to admit "we don't already know everything" - to get us in the frame of mind to explore new ideas. I still get overwhelmed with the volume that is coming at us all at once. I guess as far as content goes, it's not much different than it used to be with a newspaper; what's different is adding the posts to it. I have easily spent the day going through an array of articles to have my head spinning when I was done. I've decided to cut way back and make it less stressful and time-consuming (unfortunately, I'm learning less).

Albert Einstein supposedly said ...

" ... only two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity ... "

And I say ...

It is possible to act dumber than you are ... but not smarter than you are.

While I like it here on the Vine ... "I like some of the people" I should say ... but I find it more and more ... I don't know the next word ... disappointing, frustrating, infuriating and saddening when people I like leave (for any reason).

I often think about how joyful it would be to have about a dozen (maybe more) Viners-in-particular, "in the neighborhood" (you know who you are). We could learn from one another as we hang out, walk the woods, take pictures ... share experiences that would make us laugh, make us cry, break our hearts ...

Am I becoming a sentimental old dude, or, just beginning to understand the things in life that actually matter?

Wow, some really great quotes here that I will have to remember.

To answer A. Mac's original questions with complete honesty: I don't know.

Now that I truly have no control over the future of Newsvine, it is hard for me to give you guys insight into where things will end up. Of course there are some things I would have liked to see come to fruition during my tenure at Newsvine. But there are always more things to imagine than can actually be carried out in real life, given complexities and constraints. In all though, I'd say that we've all done pretty well together.

We also have to remember that what Newsvine is, is in a large part determined by all of us (and now I really do mean all of US). A. Mac, your work in helping to build a flourishing community of photography enthusiasts, within the larger community, is a prime example of this. We don't need new features or tools or instructions to do things like this, all we need is some ingenuity and each other.

I hope some of your travel is for pleasure, and if so, try the West and Southwest of Ireland, you will not be disappointed. Find some favourite pubs to hang out in. It is always Failte (Welcome) in Ireland.

Thank you for being co-founder of Newsvine. Without you, I would not be able to pursue a dream.

And now I hope you will be pursuing another dream of yours.

All the Best..............Theresa N

Crusher.

Calvin

If your travel is for pleasure, try the West and Southwest Coasts of Ireland, you will not be disappointed.

I'll second that recommendation!

I'm just 30 minutes west of Cleveland, so if you're out this way, beer is on me...sorry to see ya leave.

The Incredulous One

Hey, it's not everyone gets an orange flavored drink named after them (though possibly it was the other way round). Should be enough for any man. But no. You had to go and co-found NV.

Good luck and good life to you.

Heh... thanks. I will stick to the beer that Crusher offered and not (the drinkable) Tang. I had one a couple years ago and it was disgusting!

Theresa, travels will be for both business and pleasure. Hopefully, they are one in the same.

Thank you for everything you've done for this community, Calvin! Newsvine is a truly marvelous site -- my favorite, actually -- and I can honestly say that it has made me genuinely happier, and that's a great deal more than one could say about other sites I frequent. A number of us take pride in calling ourselves Newsvine columnists, and that's unique in and of itself. Perhaps it's because you were always one of the most visible employees, from my perspective anyway, but I believe that Newsvine would be a considerably worse place had you not been a part of it, and it somehow existed otherwise. Long story short, thank you so much for making Newsvine a site worthy of being a regular on.

I don't drink, but if you're ever in Binghamton NY, I'll at least get you a slice and a coke, and you can listen to me rant for an hour about the benefits of a progressive tax :)

Ditto. And the best of luck in your new endeavors! Thanks for co-founding this site, it really has changed my life (style)--for the better!

Matt and chelli, it really means a lot to me to hear that from you both. It's a wonderful feeling to know that I had something to do with someone's else's happiness.

Matt, I will take you up on the slice and the rant!
