(Fake) Mummified "Sea Monster" Corpse For Sale on Ebay

advertisement

I have no idea if this is a hoax or not, the thing looks kinda fake, but the current bid is at $321. This thing is about as ugly as they come. I've never seen anything like it in the water, though I have seen fish that look like they're 'all head' (e.g., Cabezon). Sorry in advance if this is indeed a hoax, I guess we'll see soon if eBay pulls the auction.

Update: upon review of the seller's history of transactions I have come to the conclusion that this guy is BS. He has sold a number of "Sea Monsters" finds that magically washed up on the beach in Florida. A single one in a million find is believable, but multiple 'discoveries' is very implausible. Sorry for the false alarm, at least they're quirky and ugly.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Looks very much like a Gorilla skull mated to a fish body.

I used to do things like that to my sisters when I was small. I'm sure it will come back to haunt me someday ;)

Maybe the whole newsvine community can pitch in and we can all use it for a certain amount of time to scare all are sisters, friends, etc.

So it's fake, in the sense that it didn't actually wash up like that. *smile* But it's art. I don't recall having ever seen a taxidermy artist before. I love it. Wish he would make a sea serpent...

My point is that the seller uses language to make it seem like the item is real, and yet it's not. This borders on fraud, and I don't think that's right. I understand "caveat emptor," but I don't think buyers should have to work to discover if an item is real or not.

I totally agree. I can't believe that thing is allowed to be listed. It was even taken down then put back up because of payment options. I should get a chunk of metal and sell it as a piece of the 'real' Brooklyn Bridge.
