Coral Reefs Wiped Out at Sipadan, Malaysia

advertisement

Hundreds of meters of coral and turtles have been wiped out at Sipadan [Island] in a tragic accident involving a large barge and the local irresponsibility of whoever is managing the island. It is incredible ironic that dive resorts were pushed off of the island in an attempt to preserve Sipadan's amazing marine life, only to result in the destruction of the very resource they were trying to protect. The beached barge was carrying steel and concrete mixing supplies, and so far, no one has reported why so many building supplies were on their way to Sipadan.

This makes me terribly sad. Sipadan is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I wrote an article on this place a while back. Here are a couple photo galleries of the tiny island, on the land and in the water.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

More photos Calvin! Fantastic. Those really bring home what was lost in this incident, and it really is a shame.

Expressing grave concern, Kah Kiat who is also Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said he has been informed that some corals had been damaged by the barge. He said:

The damage is said to be substantial and as a result, we may even have to consider closing the island indefinitely to let the island rest and regenerate.
